During my work with the Dineh’ (Navajo) community as a visual arts educator, I became aware of the many points in the educational system which were in need of increased efficiency to streamline the mountain of tasks that have been assigned to professional educators. As I came into contact with some of these systems and worked with the school to streamline systems, it became apparent that this could be a never ending job. Lightbulb: job security.
At the end of the 2015 academic school year, I concluded five years of teaching experience and decided to switch gears in order to work to improve the much larger points of inefficiency of the American Education System. Having had access to a rigorous education in my early years in Washington state and then moving to New Mexico for middle and high school, I saw many similarities and differences in the culture of education. As I transitioned into the role of teacher, I came to understand some of the causes and complexities, but I am still learning about the roots of the educational system and the multitude of events which have created the current climate of the breaking down of our current educational system. The fact is that many students are not being served well by this institution. So, one of the categories for this blog will be to document continued research into the roots, causes, and current trends in educational reform in America with a larger view to incorporating applicable philosophies from a larger world view.
